Driver Shortage Leads To Further Surcharges

Posted on: 1 Aug 2021

With the driver shortage now recognised to be at crisis point, we have been witnessing increased container transport costs and the introduction of a new surcharge.

A Driver Retention Surcharge (DRS) is now being implemented by many container hauliers that face increased costs trying to retain and attract new drivers within the sector.

The driver shortage is estimated to be upwards of 65,000 vacancies and the container transport industry is perhaps suffering the most as it struggles to compete on salary levels with supermarkets and major retailers for LGV drivers.

The cost of the DRS seems to be varying between hauliers and carriers right now, but is usually between £75 and £100 per delivery. In most cases this is effective immediately or imminently and will be reviewed every 3 months.
